Missed miscarriage managment

A missed miscarriage, also known as a silent miscarriage, occurs when a pregnancy stops developing or the baby dies before the 20th week of pregnancy, but the body doesn't recognize the loss or expel the pregnancy tissue:
  • Cause
Most of the time, there is no known cause and nothing you could have done to prevent the miscarriage.
  • Symptoms
There are often no signs of a missed miscarriage, such as pain or bleeding. Pregnancy symptoms may continue, and pregnancy hormones may remain high for some time.
  • Diagnosis
A missed miscarriage is typically diagnosed during a routine prenatal ultrasound, which may show no fetal heartbeat or an empty pregnancy sac.
  • Treatment
Treatment options include waiting for the miscarriage to happen on its own, taking medication, or undergoing a procedure to remove the pregnancy tissue.
With such a hard diagnosis combined with grieving at the same time, it's hard to know which treatment option to take. Some parents might choose to wait 1-2 weeks to see if things start passing on their own, or with labor inducing herbs. Other parents might choose to do the procedure (typically a D&C) to get it over with quickly. A lot of parents want to pass their rainbow baby in the comfort and privacy of their own home. This is safer to do before 14 weeks gestation, after that the risk of bleeding too much (hemorrhage) increases.

Midwife RX is here to help you in this difficult time. If you want to discuss options based on your health history and desires, we are here to give evidenced based information. If you're ready to get the medication to start the at home process of letting go, we can prescribe that as well. We will need a copy of the ultrasound report which verifies no heartbeat. We can discuss how this normally progresses, danger signs to look out for, and supplies to have on hand (strainer, large pads, chux pads, Tylenol, or Ibuprofen, heating pad, possibly a jar of saline, and another adult present). We will give you our personal cell phone so you can text/call with concerns and questions while it is happening. We only charge $200 for this service, which usually includes communication for a couple weeks.
